Maybe people that can read Lao can translate this info for us. According to this info. people in Ayutthaya were still refered to as Lao.

Gary, i believe Fa Ngum was banished by his family when he was young and he was raised by Khmer king then he married a Khmer princess. I think he came back to Lanxang with Khmer army to defeat his uncle, who ruled Luang Prabang or Northern Lao and then ruled Lanna as well. I think he's related to royals of Lanna as well.

I find Lao history after French occupation more interesting than the older periods. Mainly because it's interesting to see how Lao people dealt with the modernizing world around their kingdoms. One day they're riding elephants and the next, they're riding planes, trains and motorcycles. It's really interesting.

Gary, Lao kingdom was much bigger prior to that so to me Lanxang was already in decline when the French made it as part of it's French Indochina territory. If anything else we should try to learn from that history of how the Lao kingdom went into decline due greed and infighting among the monarchs.

Here is a very interesting interview. It's old. But it does help paint a better picture of the events leading up to the fall of the monarchy.

Here is a great read on the war. It's amazing to me how young the Kong le and Vang Pao were as generals. Not much older than I am now. Kong Le must have been around 30 when he was able to take over Vientiane.
